On a school trip to the mountains, teenager Paul Reynolds accidently stumbles through a doorway to a parallel universe where the industrial revolution never happened. There, the people are ruled by a powerful group called Spellbinders who use fear and ignorance to control the populace. Paul's knowledge of technology soon brings him to their unwanted attention as he tries to find a way home.
